Turn Important One-Word Terms Into Consistent Destinations
Smart Links are useful for stable product names, service names, branded terms, glossary terms, or other words that should consistently point to one canonical destination.
Each active rule contains one keyword and one destination URL. The keyword must be a single word; values containing whitespace are ignored. Aegisify normalizes the map case-insensitively, sorts keywords by length before building the replacement pattern, and applies whole-word matching so shorter text does not match inside unrelated longer words.
The public rendering filter operates on normal post content and excerpts, not wp-admin, AJAX responses, or feeds. When HTML is present, the content is divided into tags and text. Smart Links leave existing <a>, <code>, <pre>, <script>, and <style> regions alone and insert a simple Aegisify Smart Link anchor only into eligible text.
The destination is rendered with the configured URL and a dedicated aegisseo-smartlink class, which gives site owners a stable styling hook. The generated anchor also uses rel="noopener". Smart Links are applied at render time rather than permanently rewriting every stored post, so disabling the feature removes the automatic presentation layer without requiring a content-database cleanup.

The implementation protects existing markup contexts, but editorial relevance still belongs to the site owner.
Existing Anchors
Text already inside an anchor is not relinked, reducing nested-link problems and preserving hand-crafted navigation.
Code & Script Areas
Code, preformatted blocks, scripts, and styles are skipped so matching product/technical words do not become links inside executable or example code.
Destination Quality
Aegisify validates/stores a URL, but the administrator remains responsible for choosing a correct, durable, relevant destination and testing whether the repeated link improves the reading experience.
Find Related Published Content From the Source Page’s Own Topic Signals
The suggestion engine is intentionally explainable: title + categories + tags → normalized keywords → WordPress search → related published destinations.
Title, Categories & Tags
The assistant lowercases the source title and taxonomy names, removes punctuation, ignores short/common stop words, then deduplicates the remaining terms. It does not claim to run embeddings or external AI for this tab.
WordPress-Native Candidate Lookup
Up to the first six extracted terms are used in a WordPress search across published content. The source post itself is excluded, and the current routine requests a bounded candidate result set before returning the configured suggestion limit.
Title + Destination URL
The suggestion list gives the administrator the published title and permalink. It is a discovery aid: you decide whether the destination genuinely deepens the topic and where an anchor belongs.
Suggestions Are Not Auto-Inserted Here

Neither mechanism claims that adding more internal links will automatically improve rankings or “topical authority.” The SEO value depends on relevance, crawlability, information architecture, anchor clarity, and whether the destination actually helps the reader continue the task.

Can Smart Link keywords contain multiple words?
No. The current UI and runtime map are designed for one-word keywords. Rows containing whitespace are ignored.

No. Existing anchor regions are skipped by the renderer, along with code, pre, script, and style blocks.
Does the Linking Assistant automatically insert its suggestions?
No. This tab returns related published destinations. Previewed/approved content insertion is part of the separate Issues & Fixes Autopilot workflow.
Are suggestions generated by AI?
The current Linking Assistant implementation derives terms from the source title, categories, and tags and uses WordPress search. It should not be marketed as an AI semantic-linking engine.
